Review of Missed Days

December, 16 2010:   Today we were finishing the bouncing ball assignment and starting the edge project!  Also, tomorrow is the last day of school, and I am really excited but also kind of sad because I am really starting to enjoy computer class.  I have most of the edge project done but I am just trying to fix one little part, but I think it might take me longer than I hoped!

December, 17 2010:  Today we had our last day of classes but we still worked, and I was sad to say bye to everybody at school!  Well anyways, I wish everyone a happy holiday!  Bye for now!

Bouncing Off The Walls

Today in class Mr. Arkin got us to try and create a new type of program which has to do a little with graphics, and it included a program that repeats a character to bounce off the walls of the run window.  This was a pretty cool thing to learn because with this it will open a whole new type of programming which will make computer class even better than it already is.  For homework all we have to do is to make a program that makes a character go around the borders of the run window.  That is all for now, until next time!

He Shoots He Scores

All the classes got their test back today and I think everyone was either more relieved than they should have been, or had a severe heart attack.  Myself, I got a pretty decent mark, considering I panicked halfway through the test, and I am just congratulating myself on a decent job well done!  Today we went slightly on the topic of drawing some shapes on Turing, but that was it-except for the class taking up the test.  For homework we have to try and make a program that gathers a character from the user and we have to make it bounce across the screen.  That is all for today and I hope that the rest of my tests this week go as hoped.  Bye!

The Pressure Is On

Hey everyone!  It is me and I am just here to say that today we had our surprise unit 2 test for programming, and I am really freaking out here!  I think I did okay overall but there is always the doubt that I messed something up, and I hope that it was not that big of a problem.  I know that I should not freak out that much but it always comes to mind; like if my mind kept saying "Did I do that part right or did I include all of that!"  It was a hectic day but again I think-and pray-that I did well on my test, because this is a big portion of my semester mark.

Test Your Testing Abilities

Today was the last day in our peer teaching project, and let me tell you it was really helpful.  I am still a little unclear about certain things in the programming unit but hopefully I will be good enough to get at least an 80% on my upcoming test- which is still on an unclear date.  I hope that I will do well because I really want my mark to be the best it could be.  Even though I did not know much before this year about computers I am really glad that I took this course and I know it will benefit me in the future.  Our homework this weekend is to study and review for our test.  And that is all for today, bye!

When In Doubt, Peer

Today was day 2 in our class' peer work periods, where everyone in our group has to try and become a level 4 programmer.  I personally thought that this was a great idea because not everybody can go up to the teacher and ask him at once about their issues and questions.  So he made us try to help each other.  But, we have one more day and I am starting to get a little worried about what might be coming; a test or perhaps another project?  Whatever it is I am getting a little worried and I am trying to get prepared before it is assigned.  Well the only thing we did in class was work and try to help members in our group.  That is all for today.  Bye!

Peer Power

Today was a great day, because my program for "Next Consonant" was a success!  Yes it finally worked!  Also, Mr. Arkin had a surprise in store for us today!  We had to pair up with people in our class, in groups of three or four, and try to make everyone in their our group at the same level as the highest level person in that group; this was assessed in levels from 1 to 4 (4 being the best programmer ever), just joking about level 4 being the best!  We also learned about procedures and how to write them.

How Do Functions Function

Today was another day where Mr. Arkin was present and accounted for, yes!  The three things we did in class today were: looking at algorithms of some of the programs for the sub-strings assignments, learn a little bit about functions, and check how to make some of the class's programs a little bit easier to type and understand!  I noticed that at the beginning of class, I did not how to write or how functions work, but as the class went on I started to understand a little bit better-another great lesson from Mr. Arkin.  Today for homework we are trying to implement some functions into our sub-string assignments...boy I hope I understand how to do it.  And to end a short reminder that our test is coming up very soon :o!  

Test Attack

The day came, and finally Mr. Arkin gave us a hint that our quiz is going to be tomorrow... wait!  What am I saying I meant hooray Mr. Arkin finally came back.  He told us that he was a little sick, but he was feeling better so he came to class today.  We finally took some notes, after a very long time of Mr. Arkin's absence, and they were good notes.  I am happy that he came back and I hope that he feels better so he can stay longer.  My homework is a modified sub-strings assignment 9.  That is all for today, see you later!

A Breath of Relief

Friday Dec. 3rd made me very anxious about a potential test we were supposed to have and it was nerve wracking to the core.  Mr. Arkin told us we were supposed to have it that day  but in the end we did not and it was such a relief.  I studied like crazy expecting it to be today but, it was not.  Just a little secret, he told us our quiz would be tomorrow on Dec. 6, 2010, and I am studying to try and do my best on it.  So for toady I am studying for the test.  Bye!

Tests Are A Pest

Tomorrow, 2010-12-3, will be our first quiz on sub-strings and I am a little bit nervous for it right now because at first I did not understand the sub-strings unit at all but with the help of some friends I kind of get it... THANK YOU Grace, Carol, Jerry, and Kevin!  I am just studying for it right now and I am trying to understand as much as I can!  I hope everybody, including me, does well on this quiz!

Gone Again?

Today was kind of disappointing because Mr. Arkin was not here AGAIN!  To make my day even more upsetting I realize that we have a quiz on sub-strings and we have to complete at least 15 sub-string assignments both by Friday!  HELP!  I am a little bit worried because I learn from the teacher and without the teacher I am falling back in my work, but I will continue to try my best!  Gosh, I hope he comes back this week so he can at least do one lesson on the sub-string with us!  Well that is all for now!  See you later!

Sub-Strings Galore

Today because of unknown reasons Mr. Arkin was away again and will probably be away tomorrow as well.  That has me kind of worried - is he sick or not feeling well?  Well I hope that he could get back soon because I really need him to help me understand the sub-strings better, because I am still kind of confused about it but always trying to manage and to do my best!  We were working on the sub-string assignments the whole period today and it was really great to start a new unit!

Where Are You Mr. Arkin

Hey it is me again and today was a pretty good and also pretty bad day today, and I will tell you why.  Today in computer science class I found out that Mr. Arkin was not here and we had a supply teacher today.  The supply teacher was all right but cannot compare to Mr. Arkin's awesome teaching!  I was kind of stuck today in class and I didn't have Mr. Arkin to help me solve my problem :( !  But that is also where having awesome class mates comes in handy.  So, today we started sub-strings and I am really excited to see what we will do in this unit.

Work-Aholics

Today everybody in the class was working like crazy and it was weird because everyone was so quiet and everyone was so into their work.  It seemed like I was the only one that had life left, but that was only because I was so frusterated with my assignment and it took so long to fix it.  We have a test to study for a test that is comming up the comming week.  See you later!

Testing Your Test Skills

Today we spent about 15 to 20 minutes on reviewing some of the material that will be covered on the test coming next week, still an undecided date.  We reviewed the three things that make a good programmer, good.  They include: "Reading with precision, breaking a solution into an ordered number of steps, and Visualizing the contents of memory!"  Once again we had a work period to get caught up with every assignment that we had and to ask some questions to get started on studying.  Well that is all for now!

Arrays For the Win

Today, Nov. 24, 2009, we had a really cool lesson on the topic of arrays!  The arrays are meant to make life a whole lot easier by actually recording the  values that go into RAM.  An array can be used to replace a multitude of variables for certain situations; like in the situation for a receipt it could be used with an index to replace as many variables as needed.  The rest of the class was used for working on the modified version of assignment 12.  This was also our homework for the night!

Printing My future

Today we spent about 20 minutes in reviewing important concepts for writing a HTML files.  After that session we had the rest of the class to work on assignment 12, everybody in the class got to work on it - everybody except me.  In the printer assignment I had a fatal flaw, my assignement was in another of my assignments and I almost failed the assignment, but Mr Arkin helped me and I got it working.  Thank you Mr. Arkin!  We had assignement 12 for homework.

Going Down

Today the whole class had a work period to do assignments 9-11 but I had to spend it working on my printer assignment.  I was flustered but one of the smartest people, Mr.Arkin, helped me
to finish my project and to
end the dilemma.  For homework we have to work on the other assignments 12-13.

Going Back to Your Roots

Today we had a new assignment/project given to us that will be due on 2010-11-22, it is a printer comparison project.  Since I was a little late to class today I missed a bit of information but that will not stop me!  We must make a html file -or webpage- again.  This will be pretty nice to go back to the first unit of computers.  To all have a nice weekend.

Checking Codes

Today we had a chance to evaluate some of the codes from our class mates, and it was really cool.  That gave us a chance to check some of the common mistakes; like how spacing becomes an issue.  Also, the class got to have a one-one evaluation with another student and we got to see our habits checked and stoped before they became unbreakable habits.

Having a Way With a Survey

Today the first thing the class did was answer a few questions on a survey, and it was really cool because in that survey we could state our opinions of how the class should be taught and how the class should proceed with the  curriculum.  Also, we had a chance to get more of our repetition assignments done.  The assignments were for homework-and not all of them but a few should have been done.

Repeat the Repetition

Today we learned about guarding against inappropriate values and about some new built-in procedures. 
For homework we have to complete assignments 3-5.

"Lather, Rinse, Repeat"

Today we finally started looking into the unit of repetition, hooray!  In this class we have started on the basic terms and rules of creating a program about repetition.  We took notes the whole class, and personally I think I learned a lot.  I found the key word "Loop" very interesting and I would like to see if the class could learn about it more.

Test of all Tests

Hey everyone!  Just here to say that today we had a test review of our first test and we also got our test back, and let me tell you that it was kind of disappointing for what most people got including me but it is all something we could learn from.  It is telling us that we have to study more and that we all should pay attention in class more.  To end this blog I say good luck to all future test writers.

Aye Ya Yie!

Today all the computer classes had the computer test on the whole programming unit today, and it was hard.  One thing that made me upset was that when I was writing the test I completely blanked out and I forgot a few things but overall I thing I at least got an okay mark.  This is a reminder to all, study for tests and don't get too nervous when writing one!

Test Pest

Today the entire class we had a review of what the test is going to be about, and it was a lot to handle.  We were told that everything that we had learned until now was going to be on the test and I am a little scared.  For homework all we had to do was study.

Project Presentation

Today we had presentations on our poster and it was great!  We had to explain and compare our evaluation of Mr. Arkin's code to the whole class.  We had to try and have items and ideas that no other group had to do well in the presentation. 
For homework we have to asses all our selection programms and study for the class's first test; on programming.

Friday for the Win

On Friday November the 5th our class did a continuation of the poster assignment that we did from before.  In this class we just added more information to the poster, reviewed it for mistakes, and put the finishing touches on it.  Also because of a class binder check to a different class Mr. Arkin told the class-and showed how-to write the proper format of the dates. 
For homework we had to correct our date mistakes.

Desk Check Mania

Today the entire class was devoted to "Desk Checking" a program that was created by Mr. Arkin for us to practice our skills.  We split up into groups of 4 and worked on the assignment together.  In the end the whole class had to submit a poster paper of different keywords, operators and anything else that we could find in the program that he gave us. 
For homework we have to continue to practice our desk checking!

Case in Point

Today we learned about how to make case statements in our programming unit.  It makes everything in programming easier because it allows the programmer to replace if-ladders with theses simpler and more efficient case statements.  We also got a preview of a few more key words : case, of, label, loop, exit, end loop, and when!
For homework we have a new selection assignment that had to deal with an ATM machine.

Reviews

Today we had a fun class because we finished all our selection assignments and we started on repetition. 
We took up some of the work with our classmates and the teacher helped to explain some of the questions that some of the students have left.

Supply for the Teacher

On Thursday I did nothave computer class because of the science field trip, but on Friday our class had a supply teacher who was very nice.  We had all the selection assignments to do for Monday.

Select the Selection

Today we were looking over some of the previously done assignments from the selection assignments and it was good because even though programming can be easy sometimes it can also be a pain.

Boolean Lessons

Today for class we had a new lesson on programming that has to do with Boolean operators.  We learned about the structure and the basic steps to understanding how to write Boolean expressions.  We learned about the true part, the false part, the purposes of the key words "If, then, end if, and else".  In today's class we also had a long work period to start working on our assignments and to try and get as many of them done. 
For homework we have the blog and to try and work on more assignments.

Awesome Views and Previews

Today was a cool day because in class we got to learn about something that I had trouble understanding, Desk-Checking.  Desk checking is an important skill to have because it will help you understand how computers work and it will give you a better understanding of programming.  We used three pages to evaluate some examples to get us started on desk-checking. 
We also reviewed the Arithmetic operators and learned about Relational operators.  Arithmetic operators give a numerical result and relational operators give Boolean results.
We have lots of homework today but it is nothing that cannot be done.

Another Review Day

Today we learned about a few more procedures and they are really cool,  like "Colour and  Colourback."  We also reviewed some of the effects that the clearing procedure has on a run window.  We learned about new funtions called "Ord" for ordinal, and "Chr" which stands for character.
Also today the teacher gave a handful of students a chance to review earlier topics. 
Today was an overall good day.

Review of Reviews

Today ( Thursday Oct. 21) we had a review of some of the most recent assignments like assignments 4 and 5.  We also had a Q and A for this class and anything that we did not understand.
We did not do much but we had to continue our assignments for homework.

Oh No!

Today was a great day to get back our marks for the "Autobiography" assignment.  I got a mark that I am pleased with, but as everyone says there is always room for improvement.  Today for the entire class we were looking over the marking scheme and the meanings of the teacher's comments.  It was great to see where I went wrong because it will help me get a better mark the next time we have an assignment.
For homework all we have to do is to do as many of the assignments as we can for the next class.

Homework Catastrophe

Today in class we had a homework check-up and it was a catastrophe.  Half of the class was not even done assignment 1-5 and because we had a check-up I found out I did some things wrong which is not good for me. 
So for homework I have to redo some of my assignments and do my daily blog.

Programming Galore

Today since we fell behind the other classes we had to do some extra work and definitions to catch up to them. 
We have a lot of homework and they all include assignments that were for us because we were behind. 
We learned how to make variable lists and everything related to that sort.

Review

We had a review of some of the things the class did from the beginning of this programming unit.  And we also learned about some new key words and about variables.  Also we had to do the definitions for some new words for our programming glossary.
Homework includes summaries on new concepts and the definitions for new words not done in class.

Asterisk Mania!

Today in class we had to copy down a lot more definitions for our soon to be finished programming glossary.  We also had a class assignment where we have to make a box using Turing and only asterisks. 
For homework we have to review some terms for next class.

Today in class we had to take a lot of notes on the very interesting subject of programming, well the basics anyways.  We had to learn new definitions and it was very cool because I have never heard of some of these words.  We also had work on using locations in the fragments and repetitive symbols.

Turing

Today we began our first lesson on programming using the program called "Turing."  It is a very interesting program because we are going to be using it to do most of our programming work using it.  It has some special functions that make this program very easy to use and it is fun to use it. 
Today for work we have to do our blog and do the assignments given to us on the basics of programming.

Intro to programming

Today we had an introduction to programming using the program called Turing.  It was really cool to see how the characters in the codes are invisible.
There was no work.

Binary for everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today we learned more about the amazing system of binary codes.  It was cool to see how all the characters have different binary codes for everything you can type and do.  We had to decode Mr. Arkin's blog which was written all in binary codes.  WE had a good day today overall.
My homework is to finish my glossary and then I will be done my work.!!!!!!!

Yes!!!!

Today we learned about "Bits" and it was awesome.  There were so many codes and they all had to do with math, my favourite subject.  We also finished the last part of our basic computer glossary.  Also, I got my glossary updated and I am almost there I just need the pictures and I am done.
My homework is to find pictures and update my page.

Today was another day for taking notes and nothing really happened.  We were only taking notes and listening to Mr. Arkin tell us definitions about the basic glossary.

Notes galore

Hey everybody it is me and I am just updating you on how we spent class today.  Today we took notes for almost the entire period and we only got 15 minutes to start working on our new glossary.  The main focus of this class was to get as many definitions from the glossary as we could so we can begin our unit on programming.

Glossary day

Hi everyone!  It was a very interesting day today.  The main focus today in class was all about taking notes about the glossary.  We have to make a new glossary page in addition to the class glossary we were working on these past few days.  I especially liked the fact that I learned the definitions of many new words, in addition to the many new words that have been brought up in the class.
Today I am just getting my html for the new glossary valid.

Today we were working on catching up on our glossary and we took a few notes.  The glossary took quite some time to get running and working but I am still working on it. 
For homework I am trying my best to get it finished by today.

Glossaries

Today in class we didn't have to take any notes again and we worked on our glossary page all class.  I am progressing better than I expected.  I am almost finished with my informal definitions and then I will start with my formal definitions, at which point I will be done my glossary page.
For homework today I am working on my glossary page some more.

FRIDAY
Sorry but I have not done my Friday blog.  So here it goes...on Friday we had no notes or anything of the sort but what we had to do was to get a new link, one that has the marking page on it, up and running before class was over.  Another big thing we had to worry about was the peer marking we had to finish.  We had until 10:00pm on Friday to have everything done and ready because Mr. Arkin was going to have the cut off at that hour. 
For homework on Friday I had to apply just a few more finishing touches to the page.


MONDAY
Today we were working on glossary definitions with some of our lab classmates.  We also learned about some new programs for our work.

Today for work I am making another html and starting some new program.

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today was a very good day because everything was working out the way I wanted it to go.  Today I finally got  my close to perfect, for me, web page up and running.  But let me tell you that this task is no laughing matter.  It took almost three weeks of hard work to get this page running.  Three week of having to write pages of source codes almost perfectly, and even one little mistake meant no web page for me.


For work I almost finished and perfected my page.

Finally!

The malfunction!

Today was another of those days.  It was a day where I tried to get everything working but today was the opposite of that.  I tried, and failed, but that will not stop me.  I am very persistent and very determined to get everything working.  Today, like always, we took notes from the board but today was for the finishing touches of the projects.  But alas I had no luck.
For homework I am working on finishing my project.

good day

Today was one of my favourite days because everything in today's class seemed to go according to what I had hoped.  Today I got my internal and external links running and we took some more notes on how we should set-up our web page.  Right now my web page is actually becoming more of a website, but only a very basic one.  It is looking quite well and I am actually enjoying the work and the programming that we get to do. 
One of the best things  we get to do is actually experiment with different characters and different page set-ups.

Today was a very productive day for me!!

finally

On Friday September 17, I finally got my web page online.  Yeah!  It took almost the whole class but I finally got it working thanks to Mr. Arkin.  The entire class on Friday had another priority to get everybody's web page online and running.  I think I was one of the last people to get it working, but what matters is that is is up and that I am almost done.  I want to thank my classmates for helping me, but I want to thank Mr. Arkin again for whom which helped me the most. 
That class was an exciting class and I am glad my page is finally up!

Today was one of my better days.  Today I got both of my html and css pages validated and I was so happy that I finished one of the most difficult tasks in getting a web page on the web.  After I got it validated I started to work on my paragraph and to my surprise my page became invalid.  The sad thing is that it became invalid at the last few minutes of class.  Today we the class had to copy down a lot of notes, notes that mainly involved the windows operating system and keyboard shortcuts.
Today was a more productive day than usual.

Rough day.

Today was and okay day in general.  Our class priority was to get our html and our css files verified so they would work properly.  This part of the day was rough for me because I had problems verifying the html and css files.  I started out with 32 errors on my html files but after taking helpful notes, and getting help from my teacher I managed to reduce it to 7 mistakes. 
For homework I am trying to get my last set of errors fixed so I can be ready for whatever lesson I will have tomorrow.

today was fine

Today, Mr. Arkin was absent and we had a supply teacher.  I liked the supply as well.  So for today's class I was working on meeting the requirements of the marking scheme and since it was a "Late Start" day I didn't get to write a lot more in my text.  I just have one more paragraph to finish and then I am done.  The hardest part I think is coming up with a fictitious autobiography and making a legit story to go with it, but that is probably the reason we go to school, to learn and practice.
Today I am trying to write more on the text.
I enjoyed today's class as well.

whew!!

On Monday Mr. Arkin returned, and I was happy for his return.  In computer class the entire class was given a priority of getting even the unfinished web page of each student up and running.  This was difficult considering that I had difficulty getting the filezilla installed in the schools computer, but that took up most of my class time and I almost didn't have enough time to get my page up and running.  Luckily one of my class mates helped me and I got it running at the last second before the bell went off. 
For homework I tried getting more of my work finished.
That was a difficult class.   Whew!!!!

good day

Today was a very good day.  I was working on my web page and it was getting easier the more I worked and practiced.  At first i was a little confused but with the help of my classmates it became easier.  The great thing about today was that out of my entire class I was one of the few people that got the page working early, but as the class went on so did everybody else.  I was one of the hosts for this class, and it was a good class.  Every seemed to behave and stay relatively quiet.  I think the teacher liked our class today because she didn't seem to have to call on anybody's attention, which is a good thing.
For home work I got started on my autobiography.  I thought this assignment was going to be difficult, but in reality it is fairly easy.

confusing day

Today in class I had my first real day of classes, and let me tell you it is like a slap in the face!  The new speed of learning and the amount I had to take in, was a little overwhelming; especially when the teacher had to teach us more than three classes of work in one period.  The overwhelming part was all the notes and the information I had to take in, while trying to understand at the same time.  All I did in class was take notes and try to understand the basics of creating a website.  All this seems to come easier to me as I get used to things like homework and note taking.
For home work I was just reviewing some things about our first project.  This is the only homework I had for this class. 
Overall I feel better now that I have to step up my game to stay up to speed because I always like a challenge.

school days

Today was the first day of school and it was awesome.  Today in computer science we, the class, had Mr. Arkin briefed us about some homework we must get ahead on. The reason being, he will not be in school this coming Thursday and Friday so even though it is the first days of school we already have to get going.  As he was talking we had to take notes while listening attentively so we don't miss a thing.  To add to this great first day I made some new friends in his class. 
Today was also the first time i have had homework in a long time but as always I didn't mind...because i like homework.  I had to make an account for blogger.com and then, as I am doing right now, I have to write in my blog.  I had to create a wikispaces account and review an assignment.   

I really enjoyed his company and he has a great personality.  I am looking forward to learning more with him.
